Silly thought
I wonder:

If a teacher has a Facebook account, and his students ask to add him, and so does his totally-non-teaching-related friend...

And he posts some link or note or quiz, and the TNTR friend makes a comment on it that includes some expletive like 'fuck' or 'KNN!'...

And a student's parent happens to see that on his child's Facebook newsfeed, and the parent complains to the school about the child's teacher having vulgarities on his Facebook...

What would happen?

Yar exactly!  I said this because I commented on Bryan's Facebook and used the term 'mindfuck', and then I wondered whether it would be odd if his students were on his Facebook F-list....

Oh don't worry: NONE of the students I teach (or even those who are still students in school while I'm still teaching there) are on my account, and I've just pruned off those who I used to teach and am not comfortable sharing certain details of my life with.

So yeah, "fuck" all you want.

Ah there's nothing better than a safe approval to "fuck" away!

I only add ex-students too unless they happen to be my BB Boys. But I'm planning to delete them all 'cos I'm so sick of getting requests from ex/current students to add them!!

Haha, one of the perils of being in a career where you constantly meet new people I suppose!

u shouldnt be needing to censor your words for these just-in-case situations that may not even occur. the FB owner should know how to add to limited profile etc.

If is prambry skool kids, then will have some real problems. These parents the backside can be damn itchy one.

ABSOLUTELY none of my kids, current or graduated will be added to my main Facebook account (I don't like to use "FB". To me, it means something else laaah). I create another account specially for them to add all they want.

Some things cannot privacy settings leh.  Like how you make it that none of your friends' comments can be seen by a certain list?

If that happened at my school. I'd be called in to talk to the principal. (Or they would get my HOD to talk to me, sternly.) Probably will be told to shut down my FB account. And warned not to post anything on the internet again.

Yeah. Private school. Parents rule.

(One of the reasons I don't have FB or MySpace. Blogging is too old school for the kids.)

I think it's ridiculous that a teacher can be blamed for something that isn't even his/her doing but someone else posting on his/her Facebook account instead!

Hmm. Again, very late comment. Well, a person can be blamed for absolutely anything that the blamer wants to blame the person for, right? When it comes to ridiculous people, it doesn't have to be Facebook.

Back when I was DM, I've been complained against by residents who didn't want me to play the National Anthem every morning at 7:25am. I'm like, "This school has been here for 20+ years. Didn't you know when you bought your flat that schools play the National Anthem every morning at flag-raising?"

I've even been blamed for the overly loud singing of this bird that likes to sit in this tree that's in the school compound!

For all these, we basically just ignore them. It's really up to the school Principal and administration how parochial they want to be. So for teachers, I guess it's also important to know how your school views such things.

For me, if I received a complaint like what you described from one of my parents about one of the teachers in my department, I'd politely tell the parent to go stuff it and won't even bother talking to my teacher about it.
